A Children's Mass?

Dear Parishioners,

I have given quite a bit of thought as to how we might minister more effectively to families. I think it is important that we do all we can to provide, not just religious education, but other services for parents and their children.

For instance, we now have some chairs in the vestibule for parents to sit if they need to take their children out during Mass. I realize this is a small gesture, but I also hope it may help parents to stay engaged in the Mass during those more challenging times.

We also have Children's Liturgy of the Word at the 9am and 1lam Mass for children ages K-3 to experience the Word being proclaimed more at their level. Then there is our Little Lambs ministry for our smaller children.

After some thought, I would like to add a special Mass aimed at the children once a month. Soon, at the 9am Mass, we will start a Children's Mass. Initially this will involve children proclaiming the readings, altar servers, offering the gifts, and a special homily geared particularly toward them. On those Sundays it is my hope that those of you with children will make a particular effort to attend the 9am Mass. It is also my hope that everyone will welcome this effort with enthusiasm and support. I would like to thank our staff for their willingness to do so much for our children, especially Maria Buhrman, Ann Maloney and Gaby Franzioni. We want our children to know that they are a vital part of the parish and that they are loved and included.

Parents, please convey to your children my desire always to help them know how much Jesus loves them and how important it is for them to have a friendship with him. We love them very much and want to help them keep growing in faith.

God's blessings,
