T.U.F. – Teens United in Faith
By Gabby Coons and Bri Trepa
Every Sunday after every mass you see a few teens standing outside selling the Sunday newspaper. You’re probably wondering why the church has a bunch of teens selling newspapers. Well that is just the beginning of where you see the Teens United in Faith or T.U.F. for short. They are all teens in high school; freshman to seniors trying to give back to their community and help raise funds to make the program bigger and better for the teens in the future.
Over these last few weeks there has been two official T.U.F. sessions since the Back-to- School Lock-In which was held here in the St. Thomas More Parish Hall. The Lock-In was led by the T.U.F. Advisory Board which is made up of teens from incoming freshman, to seniors about to leave for college in a few months. The teens that are on the board all went to a leadership conference at Notre Dame University in South Bend, Indiana over the summer. The teens fundraised and received donations to make their trip possible. One of the first things the teens did when they got back from the conference was to begin to plan the Lock-In. They oversaw the whole 25 hours of activities at the church with assistance from Kari Beth Paulk, the T.U.F. coordinator. During the Lock-In the teens learned about their road to discipleship; the theme for this year’s sessions. Along with deepening their faith the teens made new friendships that are sure to be helpful to them along their continued faith journeys.
The T.U.F. advisory board is also in charge of planning a lesson to teach the other teens during our monthly meetings. Something new that has been incorporated into the lessons this year is information on the saints. At every meeting the teens learn about a new saint and how they lived their lives acting out God’s love and helping others. As teens ourselves, we find this very beneficial, as this shows us how normal people just like us can show kindness, love, and selflessness towards others. If you look throughout the parish you will see us everywhere helping in some way. We have T.U.F. members that are serving as Ushers, Eucharistic Ministers, Choir members, Lecturing, Altar Servers, Catechists, and of course, selling newspapers.
As young adults the T.U.F. members are striving every day to improve the parish and our church community. We want to keep growing within St. Thomas More, and to make sure that we always center our lives around God and his everlasting love for us. And by growing in faith, and acting in love, we will make a better future for ourselves and those around us.October 12, 2017
