Cars, Cars, Cars…..
By Frank Goode
Most weekends in the Valley of the Sun there are one or more gatherings of car enthusiasts and their treasured classic, custom, hot rod, muscle, and specialty cars and trucks. On February 24, 2018 St. Thomas More will join this list of gatherings with its First Annual Car Show in the church parking lot.
A group of dedicated car enthusiasts (fanatics?) led by Deacon Sal Lema is currently working on the details of what will become a regular annual event for the parish. The group will be reaching out to parishioners, local car clubs, and anyone who owns an interesting vehicle to join us and display their prize set of wheels.
Car shows are not just for enthusiasts but are for anyone who might be interested, curious, or who just wants to bring the family out for a pleasant afternoon together. The shows also give us the opportunity to remember the cars that excited us in our youth and to tell our children tales of how things were “back in the day”. At a recent show in Peoria this writer saw a beautiful bright red reproduction of an early 1960’s Dodge Coronet drag race car. I remember standing in the pit area at the Detroit Dragway in the early 60’s and watching the Ramchargers defeat challenger after challenger in same type of car. Perhaps the STM car show can bring back similar memories for you as well.
Early interest in the show is strong and we are expecting a wide variety of vehicles from amazing custom and hot rods, classic older models, older and newer muscle cars, low riders and at least one race car. More information will be coming in future weekly church bulletins with registration beginning in early January. Keep February 24 open on your calendar and plan to come out and see some great cars!December 31, 2017
