Ann and Maria
By Steve Taranovich
I have personal experience with St. Thomas More’s Religious Education program for children since my wife, Loretta and I are both catechists in this ministry. We have come to know and love both Maria Buhrman and Ann Maloney in the short year and a half that we know them. We are amazed at how thorough and organized they are with such excellent support to all the catechists using their superb communication skills on the Internet and via mail as well as a few meetings with us throughout the year.
Maria Buhrman started working at STM in July of 2004, replacing TC Colla as the Coordinator of Christian Formation of kindergarten through sixth grade students. With eleven years of prior experience as a CRE in the diocese, she was hired to transition the elementary process from a neighborhood small faith-sharing model into a classroom model at Arrowhead School, as the parish hall was not yet built. In addition to the grade level formation of grades of kindergarten through sixth grade, Maria’s duties included overseeing formation of a home-school process, sacrament preparation and Children’s Liturgy of the Word. In 2005, sixth grade was transitioned to Youth Ministry under Chris Thomas to better address the changing needs of students in this grade.
Ann Maloney was hired in 2005 to help as Assistant Coordinator to Maria. With her background in education, she also assisted in classroom and program planning as well. In 2005, Maria and Ann implemented the diocesan restored order sacrament mandate changing Confirmation and Eucharist from two processes into one.
Together, they have continued to address the changing needs of students and families with successful innovative programs, such as the service focused classes of 4th (BFF) and 5th (DJs) graders and the Family Faith Food Boxes for Reconciliation preparation and the theme based Confirmation/Communion preparation process.
What a team they are! Thank you God for their talents.September 21, 2017
