St. Joseph the Worker Announces Grand Opening of the Maryvale Community Success Center
Who is St. Joseph the Worker?
St. Joseph the Worker – Working to End Homelessness
SJW’s Mission is to assist homeless, low-income and other disadvantaged individuals in their efforts to become self-sufficient productive members of society through permanent, full-time employment. During the first six months of this fiscal year 2013, 1294 individuals secured full-time jobs with a $9.10 an hour starting wage rate; 47% of the jobs offered benefits. More than 2448 different individuals received services with job search assistance, readiness resources and referrals as well as encouragement and support. With 20 Off-Campus satellite locations throughout Maricopa County, 925 jobs were secured over and above the first four months.
As a volunteer, you are a vital part of the team! Volunteer opportunities are available for long-term commitments or one-time activities. You can participate as an individual or as a group. Volunteers dedicated thousands of hours of direct service this past year. Some onsite opportunities available: Working in the Clothing Closet; Computer Assistance/Lab Monitor; Job Readiness Workshop Instructor; Practice Interviewer; Resume-writer. Check out SJW’s website at www.sjwjob.org or call 602-417-9854. Other volunteer opportunities were through the YES/Italian Association [Paul and Connie Schwartz] who collect old glasses, by Karen Kozlowski’s parish and office clothing drive for needed business clothes and the SISTERS gathering women’s accessories to be used by job interviewees. There is always a need for gently used clothing, hygiene and resource items. Candace Sherwood, Special Events and Outreach Coordinator for SJW, would be happy to meet with individuals or groups to share more volunteer opportunities.
Your financial support is also vital, as demonstrated by the continued generosity of our St Thomas More parishioners during our Annual Outreach Ministry Fundraiser. This past year SJW received &8,000.00. Brent Downs, Executive Director, recently commented on our Annual Fundraiser “…the work of St. Joseph the Worker is due in large measure to the compassion, helpfulness and support we receive from the St. Thomas More community…. their generosity of spirit and willingness to help is shown through the work of individuals, mission groups and outreach ministries…allowing us to successfully help women, men and those with families in ending their hardships and poverty through employment..”
If you would like be part of the SJW Team, but are unable to travel downtown, consider Hiking for the Homeless the first Saturday of every March. Many parishioners have joined us in the past for this event. Everyone comes away from the hike with an overall sense of well-being – physically and spiritually. Information is available the first two months of the year in the Church bulletin or just check out the website www.hikeforthehomeless.or where you can sign up now under Team St. Thomas More with your family, friends and co-workers. We encourage you to join, as a volunteer and as a Hiker, in the mission of SJW and be part of a Winning Team.
