Putting hard-working, lower income families into simple, decent, safe and affordable housing is what Habitat for Humanity is all about. It is a Christian-based non-profit that partners with churches, companies and individual donors to make this mission a reality. Qualifying families must have stable employment, good credit, be willing to invest 400 hours of their own time and pay back a no-interest loan for the value of the home. So you see, it’s not a hand-out…it’s a hand-up.
St. Thomas More parishioners continue to be active supporters of Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona, serving all of the Valley of the Sun. (Find out more about this amazing organization at http://www.habitatcaz.org/ ). Since 1999, over 150 of our volunteers have worked in partnership with churches of many denominations and local businesses to build 7 homes in Phoenix and Glendale. We offer our parishioners a broad range of volunteer opportunities and we need many types of in-kind donations of new construction material and/or professional labor to help us reach our financial contribution goals. In order to fund the construction of a home with 3 other churches, the model we strive to follow, we need to raise $22,500. We are now counting exclusively on the annual St. Thomas More car Raffle to fund this need.
With a successful raffle, we plan to be back on the work site in January of 2010, building another home with another deserving, hard-working family. If you’d like to help, buy a raffle ticket! And if you’d like to volunteer, or if you know someone in the residential construction industry who might be able to donate materials or if you want to get involved in any other way, please contact our ministry leader, Larry Prevallet, at 623-581-1326 or by email.
